If you have ever wanted to attend a vintage anything event, go! I had the pleasure of attending the “2nd Annual Vintage Trailer Bash” this past weekend, September 23-25, 2011. This was my first time I stayed for the whole weekend, in a trailer, versus just attending the open house time typically on Saturday afternoon.

I have attended others vintage trailer shows, including early Saturday mornings (before the public is invited), never having a problem, but many folks were just rolling out of their trailers and not ready for the general public. (lot’s of funny retro pajamas)

Staying overnight during the event was very different. First, you meet the others in a different context on Friday into the evening and night. A big bonus was being there late at night. Having never stayed that long, the place does not go down for the night early. Everyone seemed to be moving about, socializing around the park, bonding, trailerite to trailerite. With my buddy Eliot Crowley, an Airstream owner, we joined in with the Central Coast Airstream group for some socializing. In good fun, I was labeled an “SOB” since I have a Shasta in the restoration process. SOB standing for, “some other brand”.

Walking around at night without the crowds, camera and tripod was great fun. Along with a beautiful night, moderate temps we were surrounded by thunderstorms and open skies above.

Below are a few examples.

Study Shows People Ignore Generic Photos Online

This is somewhat self serving, but something harbored by most photographers.

I have always, selfishly thought images, mine of course, were looked at because they are interesting to look at, fulfilling my obligation to my clients getting their customers to look at the collateral materials and advertising.

I think, selfishly, that photography for my clients is a investment, not as some see photography as a expense.

Well, here is proof quality photography stops customers eyes, (full sales proposition is the copywriters job) per this study in the New York Times.

Study Shows People Ignore Generic Photos Online

The way the study is done can only be done on a computer screen, thus the “online” but I think it would apply to print materials too.

If you read the article, read the skeptical comments at the end of the article too.

Comment if you agree or disagree.

Photography and Branding with a Catalog in an Outhouse

I am always up for some good humorous jokes, especially involving “Trailers”. Several years ago, I began to play off my last name and discovered a rich treasure trove of trailer enthusiasts, mostly of vintage trailers. Many of those folks are self-effacing trailer enthusiasts telling trailer trash jokes, true aficionados.

Illustrating “Trailer Trash” jokes is pretty unconventional branding for a visual communicator, photographer, based on conventional wisdom, but the images that come to mind relating to the jokes are memorable and very entertaining. Thinking “outside of the box” is what creative people do to get people, products and services noticed. How can I not take advantage of being blessed with a noun for a last name. (Here is another fun name, Hogshead)

This is the first of many visuals illustrating “Trailer” humor in the works.

Enjoy, comment, criticize, critic and share.

Thanks in advance.

Did it drop out of the sky when a meteor or comet flew by and then not burn up while entering the atmosphere.

Cleaning out some things out back, not in my ’61 Shasta (trailer) which would not have surprised me, I ran across this alien looking growth. Wanting to combine some new and old technology in the studio, I shot these with a digital SLR camera on a 4×5 view camera, with all the swings and tilts available.

Now not being a gardener of significance, but having raised my share of vegetables and tomatoes every year and cared for basic shrubbery and lawns comparatively my find was definitely alien.

I decided to explore it with a camera and am sharing those discoveries along with a bit of prose.

First is a close-up of the covering;

Leathery base

This looks more like crumpled seamless background paper, but does have umber tones of earthy dirt, but not the really good black stuff.

Second shot is of the growth itself emanating from the leathery surface;

Alien growth

This is close-up, but still looks so odd, nothing like what I am familiar with. Using your imagination, you can see little critters and faces hiding in and among the growth. Like camilians with their ability to adapt to the surroundings via color and pattern changes.

Third shot is wide and much more revealing of the whole, but still very alien.

Moon or Mars scape. Did it drop out of the sky when a meteor or comet flew by and not completely burn up while entering the atmosphere…….

Nope, it is just an old shriveling potato in the dirt, or is that potatoe…

How can you appeal or please everyone, you cannot.

Couple of comments today were frustrating since in my mind, they conflict and proves you can’t please ‘em all.

Two different marketing managers commented as follows;

a) “My designer had a look at your web site and said you were too expensive.” http://MartinTrailer.com

b) “Who did your web site? It is so cool. Can’t wait to work together.” http://MartinTrailer.com

Same web site.

They are in very different industries, one selling to the consumer and the other to their trade, but both have to appeal to sophisticated buyers.

Can’t please all of the people all of the time, that is for sure.

This link is being past around so forgive me if you have seen it.

It hit me when I recalled a class in college that was centered around Marshall McLuhan.

The YouTube link below is about advertising professionals being influenced by there surroundings which emphasize the importance of everyday imagery.

Watch closely. While the video is 6+ mins., it is very much worth watching it all to make sense. It illustrates how images, photographs, signage, drawings everything influences our thinking.

Ed, livin' the life at the Monterrey Trailer Park, Highland Park, California.

This is another in my image series called “Slice of Life”. These are the results of polishing “seeing” skills for real work by experimenting on personal projects. The value of personal experimental shooting insures something special for customer assignments and seen in the results.

With my last name, my personal project for the past few years is vintage “trailers” naturally. While not the only genre, it has lead to many new branch off photographic opportunities.

Featured here is Ed Lum, resident of the Monterrey Trailer Park, Highland Park area, right next to Pasadena, California, in front of a vintage Gold Tone Airfloat trailer at the park. The Gold Tone is a rare option on the Airfloat trailer then and now if you can find one.

When working on personal projects, risks and growth are part of the projects that drive and translates to better work for you the client.

Ed, livin' the life at the Monterrey Trailer Park, Highland Park. It is a
designated historical site and an original "Auto Camp' from the 1920's.
Also, but unconfirmed the park was a Pony Express stop way back.

Expressions of everyday life, drawing in the viewer with real people by a slice in time.

You know you're delivering pizza to rednecks when ..........

I reading somewhere the importance about connecting with new clients. Here is a unique way of connecting and my own situation.

The story read goes like this; A guy was trying everything he could think of to get in front of a new promising prospect, but never succeeded. So, out of frustration he would mutilate the direct mail promotion piece before sending to this particular prospective client. After a few months and several promos sent mutilated, a follow-up call was made to the prospect. The prospective client said if the promos ever arrive in tact they would like to actually see the promos. So a set of clean, unbent promos were sent in an envelop and the prospect loved them inviting them to come on in and talk some business.

Mine unique situation went like this; On my web site I have “Trailer Trash” jokes page. You would be amazed at how many Google, Bing and Yahoo searches find them. I was recently contacted about a job from mid-west, but it did not work out and the buyer indicated she was having a bad day “off her rails”. So I responded with my joke page link thinking maybe that would cheer her up and make a connection for the future.

Here is was she responded back with after reading my “Trailer Trash” page ;

Subject: my first job in Southern Indiana (aka Kentucky, without the horses)

You know you’re delivering pizza to rednecks when ……….

- They say it’s the third one on the left with two Camaros on blocks

- The kids run out to pay cause Mommy and their new Uncle Rick are playing Euchre in the bedroom.

- The bird bath is now a dog bowl.

- Tips are those frosted white things on the hair of the lady of the house.

I think I made the connection.

Enjoy the day and have a good laugh!
